Sean Combs Cried At Downton Abbey Death
Mon Dec 7, 2015 01:11AM
Hip-hop mogul Sean ´Diddy´ Combs was once reduced to tears watching period drama Downton Abbey after one of his favorite characters was killed off.The rapper has made no secret of his unlikely obsession with the British TV show, and in 2013, he duped fans into believing he had landed a role on the Julian Fellowes series.Producers denied the claims, and Combs later revealed a parody he had filmed for comedy website FunnyOrDie.com, titled Downtown Abbey, in which he portrayed an aristocrat named Lord Wolcott.
Now Combs is among the celebrity fans who have opened up about their love for the program on TV special Bafta Celebrates Downton Abbey, which airs in the U.K. on 21 December (15), ahead of the sixth and final season finale on Christmas Day (25Dec15).
"I’m a big fan of Downton Abbey," he says in the special. "I kind of stumbled on it. I’m interested in history, kings and lords. I watched episode one and got wrapped up in it."
"I found out I had a crush on Lady Sybil," he recalls of actress Jessica Brown-Findlay´s character. "I watched it every week to see her pretty eyes and discovered the show was excellent. The writing is incredible and each character is such a great actor."
Combs goes on to confess he was so distraught at Lady Sybil´s death in season three, he fired off an angry missive to show producers: "When she died it was devastating to me. I was angry and wrote to the creators saying it was uncalled for and stressful."
However, his emotions were really tested when Dan Stevens´ character Matthew Crawley died in a car accident during 2013´s Christmas special.
"When Matthew Crawley died it was straight tears in my house," Combs admits. "His plight as an outsider coming in, being hit with a fortune and having to figure it out, reminded me of myself."
He adds, "I love the British. But I’m not happy the show is ending. We have to do something about it."
